Nature through the window is an intergenerational community project designed to foster connections and well-being. Open to social prescribing, this initiative is accessible to individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. Our approach supports the needs of those living with dementia without targeting them out as a distinct group.
Participants experience the therapeutic benefits of engaging with nature in a safe and welcoming space. Our sessions provide a refreshing distraction from health and social care concerns, offering a space for storytelling, sharing experiences, knowledge and learning new things.
J was brought from a local care home to the sessions by her daughter in law. Her love for the natural world was evident and she engaged as much as her condition would allow. J struggled with words but clearly loved studying the resources we provide – such as shells for our rockpool study, fossils for our woolly mammoth talk (J had been an amateur archaeologist). J would have a try at all of the crafts and her face would lit up as she watched pertinent videos but was unable to remember the topic by the time she had returned to the car. The sessions took her away from her challenges whilst in the sessions. When she died, her daughter in law (and friend) continued to come to every session for the proceeding 12 months, stating that it was a lovely way for them to remember J and viewed the project as her legacy.
“My son (age 10) really looks forward to the sessions and I can see his confidence is growing with people who he didn’t previously know – usually he is very shy. The way the sessions are run allows for him to act out what we are talking about rather than being expected to just sit still and listen (which is not something that comes naturally to him!). The interactiveness allows people to test their knowledge in a fun way and to learn new things”
“x enjoys the sessions as it gives him chance to see other people and he has found the dementia link extremely beneficial. I have been able to provide him with lots of information and connections. He is always keen to know when the next session is”
“Thank you so much for that, it was brilliant. Mum absolutely loved it and so did I. Amazing to hold those fossils. Mum was so interested and got to have a good chat with others. Where Mum is, she's probably the best, others don't really talk so it was so good for her to chat to others, and about something she loves”
"X’s level of confusion, struggles with words, and memory are worsening, however, they love to get out and it's just so good for them to be able to enjoy the group in a safe, caring, and understanding environment”
“You create such a lovely atmosphere”
“We come because it's so interesting. I really enjoy it. They’re brilliant – informative and fun, we both really enjoyed it”
